With the end of the English ICA 1 for semester 2, came another competition made for students to showcase their talents on stage. This time, allowing them to showcase their talents in multimodal semiotic design. With of course loads of preparation going into this competition, I wanted to ignore the flashy lights and the audience cheers, but instead focus on the individuals on stage and how they felt throughout this amazing event which they had paved for many to enjoy.

The City and... Rats?

Alex and Bima from class PF2331 or as what they would like to call themselves “The Rats” had such an amazing performance on stage it made me feel quite literally talentless. Performing Ambrosius by Gnome, I genuinely pondered on how they managed to keep themselves calm while also having fun on stage. Alex and Bima were both stressed out, after all thousands of eyes were glued onto them while they were on stage – who wouldn’t feel stressed? Alex shared the following: “Initially I was very stressed out as we didn’t have much time to practice. However, on the day itself I just stopped caring and knew that getting on that stage was already an achievement so just went with it.” Bima added on saying: “Going up to the stage I felt nervous as one should. but when I started performing the I completely just accepted my nervousness and focused on the song instead of my feelings. Even when I messed up, I didn’t let my embarrassment take over and continued playing.” And what a performance they delivered. Both of them crushed it on stage and managed to handle the hiccups calmly.

Running towards the light of photography.

Felix from class PF2331 was probably the person you saw running around with a canon R7 in his hand while trying to take magnificent shots for this entire event. Felix, who is passionate about photography, had this to say, “The main issue with shooting in areas such as the Auditorium is the lighting. My philosophy is that lighting is a photographer’s best and worst friend … it isn’t always in your favor. “He stated. Thus, armed with his trusty R7, Felix allowed the light and his own philosophy to properly guide him and take spectacular photos.

The Contestants and their tales.

The contestants did an amazing job presenting on stage in my opinion, with a range of topics such as neurology and forest bathing. The 3rd place winner Killian said that the bright lights made the audience look like a dark landscape. Jia Yao (2nd place) and Xanthus (1st place) reportedly had their hands in a knot due to a slight case of stage-fright, but it seems that both of them had no issue untying that knot with them presenting amazingly in-front of the crowd.

Closing the curtain.

While all this was going on, my class and I were lucky enough to sit in the front row of the auditorium, allowing us to be fully soaked and immersed in the talents of everyone performing or presenting. As I sat there, each single performance and presenter awed me as much as it awed everyone in the auditorium. From Royston’s and the Rat’s amazing performance to Jia Yao’s GYAT (Get Your Act Together) chant, it was truly an immersive and wonderful experience. The event committee set up such an amazingly planned event. I think it’s safe to say that this event wouldn’t be possible without the Language Ambassadors and their meticulous planning. With this being the second PFP English competition, it’s safe to say that many more would come our way with many more contestants who would leave their mark as some of the best communicators. Though not all 6 presenters won that day, the have definitely made their mark as an amazing presenter on stage.
