“I wanted to try something that I've never tried before.”
Justin, who started out with the primers back in april this year, joined forces with other fellow NYP Primers, to perform for Singapore’s 58th Birthday. In case you didn’t know, the NYP Primers are volunteers who perform yearly at National Day Parade previews and parades.
The NYP Primers endeavour through many months of rehearsals every Saturday from 10am to 10pm, to perform their very best on the actual day. Through a small interview conducted with Justin, his biggest mention was being intrigued with the thought of performing in front of large audiences.
“The adrenaline and thrill pumps through your veins when thousands of eyes fixate on you.”
A short side note, Justin is one of the nicest and uplifting guys I’ve met.
A diverse assembly of families, couples, and individuals, converged upon Singapore’s historic Padang. Nestled within the bustling cbd area, surrounded by tall buildings. Singaporeans eagerly wait for the commencement of the National Day Parade.
Overcoming challenges
Though a thrilling experience throughout 5 months of preparation, the first rehearsal was a demoralising one.
“During these rehearsals, there would also be an audience, seeing them all dissatisfied was very disheartening.”
“I felt like giving up.”
Justin remembered feeling upset during the first rehearsal. After the rehearsal, Justin did the smart thing by sharing this incident to his mentor.
“He was very understanding, he reassured me that this is part and parcel of the process. This helped me regain my morality.”
With such simple words of encouragement, Justin decided to persist and champion on. Justin continued to attend training sessions, all the way to his main debut – Singapore’s very special day.
Interesting extracts
“I remember this kid next to me also dancing and singing along with me, she even offered me a packet of Milo!”
“NDP strengthened my sense of belonging, reminded me of all the years here in Singapore, all the memories.”
“One piece of advice I would like to give to future participants is to have fun. Even though this is a major event that only happens yearly, it is still an event for everyone to be happy and celebrate.”
Takeaways
The hours weeks and months spent rehearsing were well worth the effort.
“I am extremely grateful to have been on this journey and my mentor who had supported me through rain and shine.”
Surely, being part of the NYP primers brought him many indelible memories he’ll never forget!
Hooray to all NYP primers who participated in this year’s national day parade!
